December at The James: Jackie McElroy “Prairie Prints Portfolio”

The James Memorial Art Center is proud to present a collection of prints by artist Jackie McElroy titled “Prairie Prints Portfolio.” The artist combines familiar North Dakota plains with interesting objects, forcing the viewer to look at prairie landscapes in an entirely new way.
In her artist statement, McElroy defines herself as a regionalist, whose work is about place. Using images such as elevators, hot air balloons, drains and ships, she juxtaposes unrelated elements into an improbable landscape to create different points of view. McElroy is retired associate art professor and chair of the Department of Visual Arts at the University of North Dakota.
"I hope that my fantasy landscapes help viewers invest time in appreciating the subtle beauty of the open plains, the dazzling skies and color schemes," she said.
McElroy taught printmaking and art history at UND, all the while making art about the vast and empty-yet-full reaches of the Red River Valley. During her long and active career, she was represented by galleries in Chicago, St. Paul, and on the East Coast. Her work was accepted into more than 80 national juried print shows and featured in numerous solo exhibitions in the Midwest and eastern United States.
This exhibit is free to the public and will be available for viewing December 11-30.
